Parenting is hard. So is being a peacemaker in a violent world. It Runs in the Family is a book about how parents can create lasting and meaningful bulwarks between their kids and the violence endemic in our culture. It posits discipline without spanks or slaps or threats of violence while considering how to raise thoughtful, compassionate, fearless young people committed to social and political change - without scaring, hectoring, or scarring them with all the wrongs in the world.
Frida Berrigan is a mother and stepmother, wife, and daughter. Her parents, Phil Berrigan and Elizabeth McAlister, were a former priest and nun who became nationwide icons for their prophetic witness against war and nuclear weapons, which sometimes resulted in long jail sentences. Berrigan grew up in the community they helped found, Jonah House in Baltimore, and becoming a parent herself has forced her to come to terms with her own upbringing in new ways. Expanding on the stories in her popular column for the website Waging Nonviolence, Berrigan has crafted a welcome antidote to the various parenting fads currently on offer from French moms and tiger moms and mean moms. She offers a unique perspective on parenting that derives from hard work, deep reflection, and lots of trial and error.

This brief book, essentially a selection of short essays about Berrigan's upbringing as the daughter of the Catholic peace activists Phillip Berrigan and Elizabeth McAlister and her own experiences as a mother attempting to raise conscientious children in a violent world, is both moving and identifiable. The author is frank about the challenges of being a member of a sort of royal family of the counterculture and on growing up with parents who were often off at protests or locked in jail, and on finding her own identity and values while honoring those of her parents.Berrigan's own challenges and choices as a mother will be familiar to any modern parent who does not reject society and popular culture but who also wants to make wise choices: How much television should the kids watch, if any? How do we instill awareness of the sufferings of the world when bombarded with constant messaging pushing materialism? The author's honesty about her own confusion on some of these subjects is quite refreshing.

It Runs in the Family On Being Raised by Radicals and Growing into Rebellious Motherhood (Audible Audio Edition) Frida Berrigan Erin Bennett Audible Studios Books Reviews
Great book
Great read. Interesting and infomative.
I know Friday personally and this book was so interesting and so relatable! I loved it!
Great read
Interesting. Her parents were dedicated to their cause. Cannot see how the children could not e
ffective by the family's lifestyle.
I'm 76, so at times I thought this book wasn't for me, but ultimately it was a powerful reminder, beautifully written, and a hopeful example of what is possible. If you are the ultimate consumer, or fearful of germs, you will be educated. The Berrigan brothers were an inspiration to my generation, may Frida be an inspiration to hers.
Great stories, important topics, lots of constructive ideas and helpful suggestions, good humor, no finger wagging.
